We are inching towards getting our ads done for Metro. All of our ads are due this Friday, April 27. This is the first year we are doing a Floor Sticker. I am very excited to track how many folks actually scan our QRL code on the sticker… and just to see it… it will be 10 feet by 12 feet!! Be sure to begin looking for our sticker around mid-June at the Dupont Metro stop.
Yes, that is Ebony Dumas ( aka DJ Natty Boom ) that is pictured. The photo was taken by Jeff Martin. Myself ( Julianne ) and our graphic designer Enrique Paulin did the layout and design.

Whew… jumping into reality. After conversation after conversation. We have have to cut the indoor bar. In looking at our capacity we want to really do one thing well… and not two or three half assed.
So, here is the final plan…
New additions…
+ Two areas just for staff to rest and chill amongst the madness. We gotta take care of our people!!
+ Sidewalk cafe is so gonna happen!
+ Special lounge area – just for whomever to hangout and talk.
+ We will have some hard liquor days… it was funny to me how many people looked at me like I was crazy to bring hard liquor into our plan. But… shots are so celebratory!

Yesterday Pixie brought over some new seating for us. We sat and chatted over this plan for a bit. Each year Miss. Pixie’s Furnishings and Whatnot gives us stuff to place on the patio and inside the Fort. Well… this year she is going to “GLAM it up” and design it.
Expect lots of umbrella’s.. cause it is gonna be HOT!!!

Since 2008 Capital Fringe has inhabited Fort Fringe at 607 New York Ave, NW. We have made this unique combination of buildings the headquarters for the summer Fringe Festival and so much more.
Today I met with our Chef Superstar Matty Griffiths ( he is the one that brought you the Ginger Teriyaki Turkey Burger w/ grilled pineapple). During our meeting this diagram or plan of the whole outdoor tent and the inside of the building was drawn.
It was the first time we did this… the first time we thought about the inside and outside at the same time as one experience.

We are hoping to do cafe seating just like A.V. had back in the 1950′s.

This image is of A.V. Ristorante Italiana ( The Fort ) from a postcard one of neighbors gave us. The date on the back says 1950. It also says “Neptune Fountain on the Sidewalk Cafe”.
Not sure about the grass…. but we will price it out!

If I have learned anything creating the Fringe Festival for the past seven years it is: nothing is ever permanent. Last year right before the 2011 Fringe Festival we were notified by our landlord that the building across the street would be moved into our big parking lot. This information hit us with a serious sense of “oh, fuck – really??!!” Time passed and nothing happened and ideas shifted about where the building would be placed exactly.
We started off 2012 by watching our borrowed Neptune getting smashed and sandwiched into two dumpsters:

We did love him so! Remember him standing so proudly with his horses to support him:

This past Saturday we gathered in the parking lot to watch Hodges Roast Beef get moved from across the street into its temporary position….

We are currently drafting the plans for the Baldacchino Gypsy Bar Tent in a new configuration for DCRA. We are hoping to include seating on the sidewalk this year – for any patrons who have attended in the past the main added benefit this adds for you… possibility of taking your drink into the restroom is a high probability for the 2012 Fringe Festival.
It is always a journey creating space. We will keep you posted on our journey this year.

Yesterday we embarked on our final paint pour day. Jeff Martin ( our photographer for this project ) called the office in the morning and said, ” let’s try solo cups for more of drip and drop effect.” This was an excellent idea. In talking and sharing our first paint pour session photos with our graphic designer Enrique Paulin he kept saying… more movement… more whipping of the hair. The use of solo cups gave us just that.
We began with a bit of hustle…

We stuck to three colors… one per person…

Light Blue First.. Pantone 3115

Yellow Next…Pantone 1225

Pink Finally…Pantone 233

Clean up was intense and beautiful…

It was surprising and wonderful to be running around the parking lot barefoot in March…

Sort of off topic… but we also had our annual audit site visit yesterday. Our auditor Linda really enjoyed watching the paint pour.

I invited Bill O’Leary to hang out with us during our paint pour. Bill is the photographer from the Post who took my photos that appeared in the paper last summer. He is really cool and I thought he would be into the whole thing we are doing. One of Bill’s photo’s ( below ) of our paint pour was on the cover of the Post’s Metro Section today.

So, what next? First we get the photos back from Jeff by Saturday at 11am. Work on Guide Cover… but more importantly come up with the copy to express the idea of pouring and throwing paint. At the start the paint symbolizes the theatre – the breath and rush your get from watching and being a part of live performance. Pouring is the act and mission of Fringe to get it all over our patrons and the city as a whole. Somehow how… ” Fringe we wanna get up all over you ” sounds totally inappropriate.
More as we process through our process.

Today we had our first paint pour photo shoot for the festival image.
We did a bit of waiting….

… but we did not seem to mind so much with the warm weather.
We started pouring around 2:15.

We used only two colors today: Red & Blue.

There was so much texture!

What we learned:
1. Four towels per person
2. Don’t open your mouth while you are getting paint poured over your head.
3. Pour the paint in drips and drabs.
4. Goggles!! We need!!
5. It worked!!!
Next week are doing a few more photo shoots. We will see what we come up with.

After creating a few rough covers of the Festival Guide. We always start with the cover of the guide as the heart of our image creation. The whole idea of colorblocking started to feel – well, empty. Then, we stumbled upon this image…

The idea of pouring paint along the floorboards at The Fort came up. To bring the use of colorblocking from the guide into our physical place.
Then we stumbled upon this image:

The idea started with finding a design that could unite many different types of people. Soon we were flushed with ideas about paint and people of all sorts interacting with the paint.. in many, many ways.
So, the next step was to pick our color palette. We created a few schemes to choose from – based on our image searches.

And then we chose: Red: Pantone 7626, Yellow: Pantone 1225, Purple: Pantone 273, Pink: Pantone 233, Aqua: Pantone 3115, Black: 100 percent.

The use of colorblocking was decided as the direction for the overall look for the 2012 Capital Fringe Festival. What is colorblocking? You’ve probably heard of the fashion trend that started in early spring 2012 that’s punctuated by pops of bold color and highlighted by the mixing and matching of separates in all-over hues, in sometimes surprising ways ( okay, maybe you have not heard of it… but now you have ). Thus, began the image and idea exploring on colorblocking. In colorblocking we saw a sense of generic or accessible design that the thousands of artists and audiences could all make their own… in whatever manner they wanted.
In the office we used Pinterest ( i know silly ) to share the images gathered. This made it really easy… no emailing required!
Here are a few of the first batch of image idea research we did.
