Small theaters’ audiences are growing, but where will they sit? – Washington Post 1.6.11

Posted by capitalfringeblog on January 8, 2012

The Washington Post  delivered a section on the State of Washington Theatre on the second weekend 2012. Many questions were posed. Many statements were made. Many facts were inserted.

Link to the article that includes Capital Fringe’s, Executive Director Julianne Brienza. Please take the time to read all the articles in the State of DC Theatre section.

Space is a critical issue for all small and even medium sized theatre companies that do not have their own space – or have a deal with a theatre that grants them space.  There is a need for small theatre space – 60-90 seat houses. This week Capital Fringe was offered a large ( over 300 seats ) well equipped house for the summer festival. The problem is the house is just to large for the festival. We usually only have one large house ( not more than 200 )  and one medium house ( not more than 150 ) for the summer festival. The rest are 60-90 seats – and mainly ones we have built. These are perfect for what should be obvious reasons.

In the coming year The – Shop at Fort Fringe will be very much operating on what theatre lingo types toss around as the “never-go-dark” mentality. The best part is all theatre companies producing in The Shop have all been producing in the summer Fringe Festival for 2-6 years. It all just fell into place naturally out of a need from groups with in our immediate community.

We of course will still be the home of  the monthly DC Clown Cabaret. Capital Fringe is thrilled to foster the Clowns! In the first year at Fort Fringe the Clown Cabaret has been incorporated as a for-profit business, acquired company liability insurance and been seen by 1000s of audience members building the patron base for clowning in the DC Metro area.

This week we took a call at the Fringe office from an artist in Chicago. He was trying to bring his two week run of a show to DC. He had called a few spaces and used the DC Space Finder. He was wanting to do the show in April 2012. One theatre he called asked him how many business people he would bring to the theatre? Another wanted to charge $3500! We do not have space to offer at The Shop – after encouraging him and giving advice – before he hung up he said – “I think i will just have a longer run in Chicago it is easier to do here.”

As Capital Fringe goes through our Strategic Planning process this year – space for the festival and for all the groups we have spawned are a major part of our new space future. We look forward to sharing ideas and achievements with as we proceed through the planning process.

fallFRINGE closing day nov. 27

Posted by capitalfringeblog on November 27, 2011

Good afternoon! Today is the final showing of Squirrel. We have been thrilled to spend so much time with Michael, Kerri, Carlos and Ian. This group of artists is fiercely intelligent and talented. It has also been a fun welcoming patrons and neighborhood folks to the Fort during the autumn. We are really digging on the indoor bar – we have talked about keeping it up for the big summer festival. Yes, an air conditioned bar!

If you just totally missed Squirrel. Take a moment to watch it on #newplayTV. Seriously, it looks and sounds great! The space and sprit of the play were beautifully captured! It is only 60 minutes… take the time if you have not seen it … watch here

Hope to see you this afternoon or later!

fallFRINGE Today: Squirrel, or The Origin of a Species

Posted by capitalfringeblog on November 25, 2011

“LeValley and Bustamante are both excellent actors with finely tuned timing and genuine chemistry, but Merino’s words are the real stars of the play.” – Washington City Paper

“So the play is high-minded mockery, and it’s directed gleefully by Kerri Rambow. Bustamante is a wiseacre as the rodent — not Bugs Bunny sarcastic but lively and flip. Ian LeValley is a blustery, pompous Darwin, and the brisk staging and relentless banter make the performance a bit of an athletic event.” - Washington Post
